  • Chassis and roll bar construction

    Chassis and roll bar construction Roll bars and tube chassis (space frames) for race cars, road cars and bikes remains one of the safest of constructions. It remains a popular choice even in the advent of Carbon Fibre partially due to its more affordable cost. Allied with thin wall, light weight, tubing such as Titanium or Docol R8 it’s also possible make a super lightweight chassis that retains the strength of heavier previously popular metals such as Cromoly or T45.    Typical example An example of contemporary tube chassis construction was our development of the super lightweight chassis for the BAC Mono ‘F’ supercar. In conjunction with government bodies we undertook the development of the chassis using the newly imported Docol R8 steel. Welding Docol was an unknown process so we established our own precision welding regimes and protocols. Docol R8, at a thin wall thickness of 1.2mm, provided a weight saving of 18% compared to T45 with the addition of increased stiffness and durability. The safety of Docol R8 had been thoroughly tested in the USA in top class drag racing where it had replaced Cromoly to control 11,000 hp engines and to guarantee increased safety standards.   Precision jigged construction Our NOX jig System is used for all chassis construction with all metals, including Titanium, as it gives a guaranteed precision placement of tubes of within 0.2mm after welding. This accuracy ensures a more precise fit for body panels and maintains better clearance for the exhaust system and for all ancillaries.     Driver experience Precision construction translates into more predictable steering and a better power response for the driver. A stiffer chassis will also improve roll over protection in racetrack situations and give the driver additional confidence at speed.
